Serbian Historical Museum

The building that houses the Serbian Historical Museum was erected as the palace of the Privileged Agrarian Bank between 1932 and 1934. With its monumentality and lavish architectural solution, it is one of the finest achievements of interwar Serbian architecture and a notable example of Belgrade Art Deco.

The palace was designed by the architects Petar and Branko Krstić, who fused modernism and tradition in an original, monumental façade they considered their finest work. The building was badly damaged in the Second World War and later restored. Since 2006 it has housed the Serbian Historical Museum — its grand ground floor is the exhibition space, while the former vaults of the Agrarian Bank have been turned into the museum's depot.
